Ohio is known for its unpredictable weather. The saying goes that if you don’t like the weather in this moment, just wait a minute or two because Ohio’s weather is always changing.  However, this winter has been more unpredictable than most. This winter, Ohioans have been enjoying 50 degree temperatures, 60 degree temperatures and still seeing a little bit of snow and ice. Of course, Northern Ohio’s residents have seen more snow and ice than Southern and Central, Ohio’s residents have. Southern and Central Ohio residents have seen plenty of rain. What does this mean for the flowers? It means that they are confused. Case in point, some of the spring flowers such as the Easter Lillies are starting to pop up from the ground.

Yes, this writer decided to enjoy just one, of the unusual 60 degree, February days. What did she find? She found her Easter Lilies springing up from the ground. This instantly worried her. She knew by the week’s end, Mother Nature may decide to cover the ground with freezing rain or snow. What would then become of these new flowers?

Easter Lilies and all types of Lilies are known to be hardy. The greenery part of the plant would probably survive. It would also probably be as vibrant as ever. However, it was the buds that worried her. She knew that there were some springs in which the lilies had more buds and more flowers than other springs. This yo-yo weather could part of that a problem. This meant one thing. This meant a trip to the local nursery or department store such as Wal-Mart (yes, the spring seeds and other gardening supplies were arriving).

The best way to protect these fragile little plants that were springing up from the ground was to pack them the best one could in loose mulch. One would have to do this is a careful way. One must try not to break any leaves. However, one needed to protect the little plant from the cold, the ice and the snow that was sure to come.
